Brookfield, Conn., (September 25, 2008) – AMS and Westco Scientific Instruments, global leaders in automated chemistry instrumentation serving the environmental and clinical marketplace, announce the acquisition of Unity Scientific, (Columbia, MD) specializing in near infrared analysis. Unity Scientific introduced the SpectraStar line of scanning monochromator NIR analyzers in 2001 providing unique QC solutions for products in the Food, Agriculture and Industrial markets. The company will offer immediate access to new markets and complement recent acquisitions made by AMS and Westco that include YDI Group Holdings, Alliance Instruments and Ysebeart. Joe Platano, President of Westco states, “The acquisition of Unity Scientific further expands our product portfolio in the analytical instrumentation market and strengthens our global distribution network with a vast array of experience in both NIR technology and industry knowledge. Our core markets have been primarily focused on environmental and clinical applications, the addition of Unity gives us a much stronger position in the food, agricultural and industrial markets. The combination of products and distribution will make AMS and Westco a significant force in the analytical instrument industry.”

“AMS and Westco are committed to retaining the focus and structure within Unity and look forward to providing the strong financial and operational support required to develop new products and applications for our served markets”, comments Doug Evans, President of Unity Scientific. “The strength of Unity has been in its products and the vast NIR experience of its employees that average 20 years each in this industry. The combination of products and distribution are complementary and we look forward to being part of a larger organization that shares the same vision as Unity to provide valued solutions to specific markets.”

“This acquisition is extremely strategic for the company,” adds Antonio Gagliarducci, Technical Director of AMS. “The addition of Unity Scientific into the AMS and Westco family enhances our analytical capabilities in the NIR market and also benefits our sample preparation product lines that are used to build NIR calibrations.
